Well, so much for momentum. The Warriors get blitzed in the first quarter, and despite modest improvements the rest of the way they just weren’t able to overcome the disastrous start. They got as close as 5 in the closing minutes, but then Phoenix bombed in 3 deep shots to put the game away (while the Warriors missed their corresponding outside shots).

3-point shooting, one of the Warriors’ biggest strengths this season, really failed them tonight as they went 2-18 — and never adjusted. Defense was the biggest problem though, as Lee and Biedrins had team lows of -22 and -16, respectively — though all the starters were double digit negative on that stat. Monta was a volume shooter at 5-17 (though he picked up 12(!) rebounds), Curry was 0-6 from three, and Dorell Wright did a Monta impression at 3-13.

Silver linings? I guess you could point to solid bench contributions from Udoh (team-high +13) and Reggie Williams (19 sorely needed points).

But, ultimately, the team just wasn’t ready to play in a game they needed to win. And as this “easy” stretch of the schedule starts to come to a close, the future of this season is starting to look fairly bleak.

The Warriors’ season turns 50 games old tonight, as Steve Nash and the Suns visit Oracle in a game between two fringe playoff teams (a perhaps generous characterization).

The Suns are currently a game and a half ahead of the Warriors in the standings, so this is a game the Dubs need to win to keep their dwindling playoff hopes alive.

Coming off arguable their best win of the season — and certainly their best team defensive performance — the Warriors will have plenty of momentum to draw off of tonight. Can they make it two good wins — and four overall — in a row?

UPDATE:(By Jake) Adding just a touch to the pre-game because this is the first game I have looked forward to watching for some time. Maybe it is the DayQuil/NyQuil combo talking though. The keys to this game for me are certainly whether or not Curry can keep his turnovers down and whether the Warrior’s can win the FT battle again. Will Curry and Monta be able to contain Nash (on his birthday) and maybe more importantly can the Warrior’s defense keep the Suns big men from hitting the outside shots? I worry about Channing Fry raining down 3′s as the Warriors fail to rotate and then give up offensive rebounds on his misses. I hope to see a total over 220, but it seems that the Warrior’s are winning more when the total is closer to 205.

Finally, a quality win against top-notch competition. The Warriors get 56 points (and 13 assists) from their starting backcourt, including 22 of their 28 fourth quarter points.

Just look at all that green in the net stats above — outside of a small deficit in rebounds and assists, the Warriors won every statistical category. Perhaps most impressive was the +9 on turnovers, as the Warriors only coughed the ball up 7 times. Curry’s 8 assists to 2 turnovers deserves a mention in that context.

The overall team defensive effort was outstanding, as it wasn’t an accident that Rose had 9 turnovers. Also good to see that the Warriors took advantage of the Bulls’ bench, as 4 of their reserves were double-digit negative on +/-.

Speaking of +/-, check out Radmonovic’s line: 20 minutes, zero points, 3 rebounds, but a team-high +23. I didn’t watch the whole game, but he must be creating a lot of space for the guards to get inside by drawing his man outside. Hell of a weapon, and what a turnaround from the early part of the season.

I said before the game that the Warriors needed to start beating good teams at home, and tonight they delivered. Credit where credit is due — and let’s hope this positive result gives them the incentive they need to keep up the defensive intensity when Phoenix and Denver come to town this week.

The Warriors put their epic 2-game winning streak on the line tonight against the red-hot Bulls. They’re gonna need a team effort for this one, especially with a thin back court (thanks to Charlie Bell’s DUI — seriously dude, great timing) and Derrick Rose ready to rack up the fouls on Curry and Ellis. Aside from the Bobcats, the Warriors have been beating the teams they’re supposed to during their recent home stretch. But now they need to take it up a level and start winning a few games where they’re underdogs; tonight would be a great time to get that started.

The Warriors resume play tonight after their long layoff, facing a Bucks team that has pwn3d them in recent years (most famously during Brandon Jennings’ 55 point outburst last year). What to watch for tonight:

  • Return of Ellis. I think his ankle injury hurt him more than the team has admitted, so we’ll see if the long layoff gets him back to his old self. The All-Star reserves will be announced before the game, so assuming that Ellis is left off he may have added motivation to put up some big numbers. Let’s just hope that doesn’t lead to him forcing anything.
  • The All Star. One Warrior will be participating in All-Star weekend, as Steph Curry has been announced for the Rookie-Sophomore game (and may also play in the 3-point shootout). Can he continue his current hot streak, or will he be the victim if Ellis regains his dominance of the team’s shot attempts?
  • Fundamentals. Smart mentioned that he was going to take advantage of the extra time off by going back to basics in a few key areas (rebounding off missed free throws was one needed refresher I remember him mentioning), and lord knows they could use this. But let’s see if it takes — can they avoid the stupid mistakes tonight?

Well, how ’bout that? The Warriors actually won a game with defense — and made it look easy.

With Monta clearly off his game (come to think of it, he hasn’t really been the same since he rolled his ankle — hopefully the 3 days off will help him pull things back together), the rest of the team really stepped up and helped them end their 4-game skid.

Curry was of course the top performer last night, but we also have to mention Biedrins’ second straight double-double (his first such streak since January of 2009), solid games from Lee and D. Wright, and Reggie Williams coming up big off the bench. And Udoh bounced back nicely from a rough game with 21 quality minutes (4 points and 5 rebounds).

Sure, Utah was missing Deron Williams, and sure, they’ve been on a downturn lately, but they’re still talented and well-coached, so it’s not like the Warriors beat the Timberwolves last night. And to do it with very little from Monta, with a huge bench contribution down the stretch, and after a demoralizing loss to the Bobcats, you really do need to give Smart some credit for having the team ready to play and for making adjustments throughout the game. Perhaps the best bounce-back performance of the season for a Warrior!

The gut impact of this game was bad enough. Blown 16 point lead? Stephen effing Jackson of all people ties the game with a banked 3 at the end of regulation?

But then you read what Adam Lauridson has to say breaking down everything that led to this loss, and it’s enough to make you want to throw up. A game like last night just makes you feel hopeless that this team will ever be able to turn a corner.

I don’t have too much else to say, except to note that Monta probably sealed the coffin on his All Star chances with that 6-24 night. That thought sure was fun while it lasted.

As the season continues to slip away, it’s hard not to think ahead and start rooting for this team to tank. They’re currently looking at the 11th pick, and while we can hope that a Lacob-run front office will be smarter about drafting, the fact remains that this team’s history gives us very little hope when it comes to a pick in that range.

Now, instead of being a buyer before the trade deadline, I’m wondering if the team should look to offload talent in return for draft picks, high-upside young players, and cap relief. Then they can start fresh with a new coach and GM — could it be any worse than what we’ve seen the past few years? Alright, just what the Warriors need — a visit from the always-struggling Bobcats!

Wait, what’s that? The Bobcats have won 4 of 5 — including 3 straight on their current road trip — and 10 of 16 overall since Paul Silas took over as coach? Still, I’d rather be facing them than the Spurs or Hornets. I guess.

In what’s becoming a regular occurrence, the Warriors are playing a game that they just can’t afford to lose if they want to keep their fast-dwindling playoff hopes alive.

The big key to me — more for the long-term future of the team than for tonight’s game — is the Biedrins-Udoh dynamic. Will Smart stick with the Latvian and see if he can get *any* production from the big guy? Or will he have a short hook and start giving Udoh more minutes at the 5, especially since Lacob made noise about wanting to see more from the rookie during his Radnich interview yesterday? We’ll find out tonight…

Stats 1.0

I finally got the site up to a baseline level of completeness in terms of the stats database and the various graphs and box scores that it populates. We now have full sized graphs that pop out if you click on any of the sparklines on the left, and I’ve added trendlines to the big graphs that are explained at the top of the Stats page (and if anyone knows where I can find points off turnovers averages by team, please let me know in the comments).

I also updated the Schedule box scores to link back to the recap for each of the already-played games, and the same is now appearing in the “2010-11 Meetings” boxes on the game previews.

This completes the opening phase in building out the stats infrastructure, which unfortunately is limited to just the team stats (I’m entering the stats manually after each game, so doing player stats would be prohibitive — something for next year perhaps if I can find a comprehensive database to access). But if there’s anything else you’d find interesting as an addition to the site, or if you notice any errors, please drop a note in comments and I’ll see what I can do!

(And apologies to anyone who has noticed the slow site response times in recent weeks — it appears to be a hosting issue (though I can’t completely rule out my PHP code), so I might need to change the site host to get that fixed completely. Unfortunately, that’s not something I’ll be able to get to for a while.)
