Story of the season: the Warriors get a gift-wrapped opportunity to steal a win that you’d expect them to normally have trouble with (second half of a back-to-back at the end of along road trip — but against a Nets team missing their best player and just back from Europe), and they throw it away with a complete inability to score when it matters most.

Last night, it was down the stretch: The Warriors offense basically shut down with 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter, and they saw a small lead bleed away against a Nets team that was almost as bad, but still was able to do enough to pick up the win.

Thus ends a brutal 2-5 road trip, one they needed to at least go 4-3 on to come home with some semblance of self-respect. Instead, we’re now left with playing out the string yet again. Sad that avoiding 50 losses remains one of the few moral victories left within reach.

Nice win for the Warriors, who overcame a slow start to beat the Cavs fairly easily. Things got a little hairy in the 4th, but they kept the lead close to double digits most of the way and will leave town with a desperately needed win.

Big night from the backcourt, as Monta and Steph combined for 47 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists. And check out the +/- that Curry pulled down: +20 in 39 minutes. I can’t remember the last time a Warrior had a number that high.

David Lee had his now customary double-double — you can call his stats hollow, but you can’t completely discount them.

Now it’s on to New Jersey, and something of a freebie as no one will be expecting much from the Dubs on the back end of a back-to-back at the end of their season-long roadie. But this team has surprised in this situation before — in particular, the game at New Orleans — so maybe they’ll come out tomorrow and surprise.

Rough loss, as the Warriors played a solid game against a quality opponent on the road, complete with an amazing couple of baskets from Monta at the end of regulation.

But the defense couldn’t hold in overtime, and at the end of the day this counts as another L. Looking at the comparative stats above, they didn’t have much business even being this close as they were significantly outrebounded and lost almost every statistical category.

Monta was great late, and Curry had a solid game despite riding the bench throughout most of the 4th quarter (smart move by Smart, as the lineup he had out there was working). I also thought Ekpe played well, though his foul trouble knocked him out early in the 3rd and he never found his way back in.

I liked seeing Lee play the 5 at the end of the game, and he had another solid stat line (14 and 14) but poor +/-. Still, that was nothing compared to Biedrins, who managed a -16 in just 9 minutes of action.

And how about Evan Turner? After struggling throughout the earlier parts of the year, looks like the dude is finally putting it together. He was a game-high +25 (in a game his team only won by 8), and was all over the place at the end of the game.

So the road trip continues, and after a night off we get to play Baron and the Cavs. That will be an easier game than tonight, though you know he’ll be motivated and we just saw how good he can still be if he puts his mind to it.

The Warriors played better than I expected, but in the end it was the most oft-written story of the season: dig an early hole that proves too much to overcome, even with a furious comeback at the end.

Big game from Monta, his best since the Utah win before the break and maybe his best since he rolled his ankle in the Kings game. Too bad Curry and Wright had off nights, and outside of David Lee no one else really showed up offensively.

While the Warriors won the rebounding battle decisively and came close from in terms of matching free throw attempts, there just wasn’t enough defense to stop Boston’s solid passing.

So the road trip continues with a game tomorrow afternoon in Philly, so it will be interesting to see how this team recovers. They should be able to take something positive from this loss, though all too often this season they’ve failed to capitalize on “good” losses against elite teams and instead jump down below the level of the followup competition.

Hurray! A win!

I missed this one, but sounds like it was pretty exciting in a blow-a-huge-lead-but-hang-on-at-the-end kind of way. Good to see Udoh get the start, and I also like seeing Curry get an almost equal number of shots as Monta. In fact, I’d love to see the Curry:Monta shot ratio at 1:1 the rest of the way and see if we can’t finally get Steph to make that sophomore leap.

So a nice upward blip to stem the downward slide, though beating the Wizards is hardly cause for much optimism. But it was still nice to see them finally win one on this trip, especially at the end of a back-to-back. Now, let’s just hope they get some rest before they face the Celtics on Friday — they’re gonna need it.

Another poor start. Another disastrous 3rd quarter. Nothing from Biedrins. Killed at the line. That part wasn’t surprising.

But 6 points, a -26, and a blown 3 from “his spot” that could have tied things late from Dorrell Wright? And all negative +/- from the starters, and all positive from the supposedly worthless bench? Well, you can’t say the Warriors aren’t finding new ways to lose.

There was one bright spot at least in the play of Reggie Williams. Dude was money from deep in the second half, and almost single-handedly kept the Warriors in the game. He’s been much more consistent of late, and if he could ever learn to become a 2-way player — and with his length, there’s no reason he can’t — he might finally turn the corner from good to, well, really good, at least.

But that was about it. Now the road trip continues, and you have to expect that the Warriors downward skid in the standings will continue right with it.

I got my time zones confused and mercifully missed this one. The Warriors once again played atrocious defense, got dominated on the boards (as Lauridsen notes, Minnesota rebounded half of their own missed shots), and dominated on the line, and it just proved too much to overcome even with the T-wolves trying to give the game away at the end.

The Warriors started well, but the aforementioned defense (or lack thereof) and a disastrous 3rd quarter put them down 17 points in the 4th quarter. Even if they had pulled off the comeback at the end, it still wouldn’t have said much positive about this team.

An odd line for Curry — 33 points, 11 rebounds, but only 2 assists? — but at least he scored. I see that Monta’s shot once again wasn’t falling, but at least he moved the ball around a bit on the way to 8 dimes (though it sounds like that final shot attempt was fairly weak). And hey, lookie there: Ekpe got a defensive rebound!

All in all, exactly what they didn’t need, and I’m starting to feel like quite the fool for my 15-12 post-All-Star prediction. They now head to Indiana for a game on Tuesday against the Pacers (the first of a back-to-back), so it will be interesting to see how the team reacts. Can’t say I’m optimistic at this point.

Well, that was ugly. I don’t have much to say about this one, except that it further confirms just how far the Warriors have to go before they’ll truly be competitive.

The way the Hawks played was exhibit A on why you make a trade before the deadline: their new acquisition spurred them to their best game in weeks, while the same old cast of characters for the Warriors showed just how bad they can be on defense. It’s pretty sad when a 16-point loss isn’t even indicative of how bad things really were in this game.

So the Warriors finish the “easy” part of their schedule at 12-10 — gaining no ground in the standings — and now they go on the road for 7 straight. At least they open up against Minnesota, who the Warriors still should beat. But if they lose that one, it’s going to be a long trip…

Ahhhh, so that’s what good defense looks like.

The Warriors play a nice first half, but missed chip shots and an endless procession of Celtics layups off bad rotations and missed-shot-fueled-fast-breaks led to a complete collapse late.

Overall, they got killed on the boards, killed in the paint, and killed in terms of shooting percentage. And the assist number also show just how well the Celtics moved the ball around on their way to easy buckets — or does it show how poorly the Warriors defended even minimal ball movement?

The one bright spot? The Warriors got to the line, big time: 28 foul shots to the Celtics 11. Hopefully that’s something they can take out of this one.

But ultimately, this game shows just how far the Warriors have to go to match the defensive intensity of an elite team. The Celtics shoved them around and didn’t give them anything easy inside, and the Warriors response was to turn into a jump-shooting team. And you’re just not going to win consistently by relying on jump shots.

The game also continued an ugly trend of getting completely shut down in the second half after competing well early against good teams, like we saw during the Florida roadie back a few weeks back. Not a good sign that the elite teams can seemingly shut this team down at will.

Now, Friday’s game against Atlanta takes on added importance, as it’s the last home game of their Oracle-centric stretch. Let’s hope they get some rest, because I’m not exactly excited about the interior matchup against the Hawks…

The Warriors ride into the All Star break in style behind a huge game from Monta Ellis and another solid defensive performance.

Monta was the hero in this one, as he put the team on his back and hit big shot after big shot in the second half. What was remarkable was that all his shots felt so needed in order for the team to keep pace. Definitely his best game in weeks, and something that should give him a good feeling while he’s fishing in Mississippi during the break.

Curry, on the other hand, had his worst game in a while, as persistent foul trouble kept him chained to the bench. And when he was on the court, his shot wasn’t falling — until his huge bucket in the closing minute to keep it a two possession game. So credit him for keeping his head in the game despite his struggles.

Dorell Wright played the sort of all-around game that has become the norm for him, with 22 points and 5 rebounds. And Reggie Williams gave the team a great offensive spark off the bench — he’s been exactly what they need on that front since he got off his slide back in January.

The bigs were just OK, though Andris’ rebounding in the fourth deserves special mention. There was one stretch where it seemed like he was grabbing every defensive board (not insignificant when offensive rebounding/putback machine Jefferson is on the opposing team). Slightly disappointing night for Lee though, as his rebounds were down for a second game in a row and he only managed 13. Brandon Wright continues to re-establish his trade value and scored 6 points. and Udoh had another largely stat-free line but continues to be a factor on defense.

And while scoring contributions off the bench outside of Reggie’s were fairly light, every single bench player was a positive on the +/-. If they can keep up that sort of consistency, it gives the team a chance to rest some of the starters (and spell Curry when he gets into foul trouble) — and that’s going to be key down the stretch.

So all-in-all another really positive win, and a great one to take into the All Star break (their 26 wins matches the win total from last year). The Warriors took care of business in these final games before the break, and by playing their best basketball of the season they give us hope that a late-season run is a legitimate possibility. We’ll know soon enough once they head back out on the road in the coming weeks, but for now we can at least savor the fact that this team is, unequivocally, improving.
