The Great Trade of 2011

So the Warriors finally got in on the trading action trading Dan Gadzuric and Brandan Wright for Troy Murphy and a 2012 2nd round pick.  Murphy makes $12M this year and will likely never put on a Warrior’s uniform.  If he cannot be flipped for another 2nd round pick he will be cut and land somewhere else as a free agent.  Brandan Wright was not going to receive a qualifying offer this Summer because he would have most likely accepted not being able to find more money on the open market. Wright makes $3.4 million this year.  Gadzuric was not getting much playing time and earns $7.25M this year.  Basically the Warriors bought a 2nd round pick in 2012 for $1.3M and opened up two roster spots if in fact Murphy gets cut. If there is a positive to take away from this, the new owners are willing to buy draft picks rather than sell them.

I would have liked to see the Warrior’s get more for Brandan Wright, but his stock was about as low as it could be.  Hindsight is 20/20 but they really should have moved him this past Summer.  I am happy to move on from the Brandan Wright era and ANOTHER failed 1st round draft pick, but this is bittersweet as the West has opened up a bit with the Williams and Carmelo trades and getting someone who can contribute to the team rather than a contract would have been nice.  However, if the Warriors bring back Jeff Adrien as Rusty Simmons is reporting then it lessens the blow a bit.  Adrien will be more useful than Murphy would be. Who gets the 2nd open roster spot if Murphy is cut? The Jewish Jordan?

I guess I can give up the project I started last night to change all of our “Brandon Wright” tags to “Brandan Wright” tags so that is good news.  Looks like Alex Smith lasted longer.

So anyone looking for more Warrior’s trades besides the slim possibility of moving Murphy for a pick?  I don’t anticipate anything and after seeing the Knicks and the Nets probably overpay in the blockbuster trades I am not confident the Warrior’s can pick up a difference maker without giving up too much.

San Jose Hornets?

Rumors are that Ellison may be interested in buying the NO Hornets from the NBA and moving them to San Jose. The Warriors may have some agreement with the NBA to receive $100M+ if another team moves to the Bay Area.

Forbes reported Wednesday that Ellison, who is worth $27 billion, could buy the Hornets and move the team to San Jose. One reason why Golden State sold for a record NBA price is that the new owners could get from $100-$150 million from an owner bringing a second team to the Bay Area, a source told Forbes.

This would certainly be an interesting twist for the Warriors and a new Bay Area rivalry, but I think it would depress me to have Ellison own a team in the Bay Area and always wonder what could have been.

Magic

Nothing of huge importance, but Magic Johnson confirmed that he had talks of buying a share of the Warriors, but that nothing came of it.

ORBe

I went through a bit of work to create my own new statistic. I should have looked at the advance stats at Basketball Reference a little closer as they have ORB% which is pretty similar to my calculation and really what I was going for. But because I did the legwork and my ORBe is slightly different I may as well post it.

I wanted to look at Offensive Rebounds in a way that accounted for chances rather than just looking Offensive Rebounds per Game. I aimed to estimate the number of chances a player has at an offensive board (this is where Basketball Reference and my method differed) and correlate that with the number of Offensive Rebounds he actual has and get a measure of Offensive Rebounding ability.

The Equation: (Player Offensive Rebounds/Team FG missed)/((player minutes played)/((team minutes)/5))*100

or pORB/(tFGm)/((pMIN/(tMIN/5))*100

Where Team FG Missed tFGM=(tFGA-tFG)

BR calculated their “chances” as tORB + oppDRB so this counts only rebounded balls, where as my ORBe counts all missed shots. ORBe includes shots that hit the top of the backboard and are out of bounds (bad) but also counts shots that go out of bounds off of someone’s hands (good, in my mind this was a valid chance).

I took the top 10 players in ORB per Game in the Western Conference plus Biedrins, Anthony Randolph (best Warrior by ORB/G) and David Lee. Below are the players posted in order of ORB/G rank.

Offensive Rebound efficiency

ORBe of the Western Conference ORB/G leaders + some Warriors

For Marcus Camby and Drew Gooden who played on multiple teams I used team stats of the team they played the most games for. I will have to go back and adjust for playing time percentages. I was surprised to Marc Gasol on this list.

Brendan Haywood DAMN! AR is not looking too bad either. His lower ORB/G is an obvious product of his lower min per game total. Striking how similar he and Jason Thompson’s numbers are.

And now the depressing part … AR is gone and David Lee, for all his rebounding ability does not show too well by ORBe with the lowest percentage on this list (by a full point). Maybe part of that was playing out of position or the style of play and he will improve on the Warriors. I sure hope so. He would have been in the top 15 in ORB/G if he were in the Western Conference last year (ahead of Biedrins and AR) so I think it is fair to compare him to this group.
