The Warriors face another hot Florida team in the Magic, who have won five straight after restocking their roster. Can the Warriors rebound from their tough loss at the Heat? Or will they continue the second half flameout that saw them give up a big lead on the road? What to watch for tonight:

  • Attitude. As I mentioned in the recap for the last game, this is a moment where the much talked about team chemistry could really make a big difference (in making sure they’re not flat — still not sure if they can make up for the talent difference). Will they come out with their heads held high, or will they lose the game in the first quarter as they did regularly during Lee’s absence?
  • Inside-Outside. The Magic can shoot the lights out from three, but then they also have beasts inside in Howard and Bass. That’s not a good combination for the Warriors’ scrambling defense, as they regularly break down and leave a man open in an effort to provide help inside after guards blow by Monta and Curry. This could be a chance for Udoh to make a mark playing some tough inside defense, especially if Biedrins remains out (since I have very little confidence in Lee’s ability to hang with Howard).
  • All-Star. These final games of the road trip could be make-or-break for Monta’s All-Star chances, as he won’t get many more chances to play in the eastern time zone before the rosters get picked. He definitely has some ground to make up — largely because of the Warriors’ record — but a couple big games against the Magic and Hornets could do wonders for his national profile. Let’s see if he can seize the opportunity…

The Warriors played a perfect first half: on fire from 3, freely running the court, knocking down buzzer beaters — but I think we all knew it was too good to last.

In the second half, the game regressed to the mean and the Warriors just looked awful. Miami clamped down on D and stiffled any flow left over from the first half, the Warriors’ turnover woes returned, Dwayne Wade started drawing fouls for getting breathed on while tomahawk chops on Ellis’ arms went uncalled, and the shots that went in during the first 24 minutes most certainly did not in the second. The Warriors scored less in the second half total than they did in either of the first two quarters.

It’s easy to blame the officiating, and they certainly deserve a lot of scorn — looking at the net stats above, the number that blares out is the -37 (!!!) on net free throw attempts. But Miami deserves credit for dictating the tempo in the second half, for driving and creating contact while the Warriors settled for jumpers, and for exerting tremendous energy on defense that was just as responsible for the Warriors’ scoring woes as the whistles were.

So what can the Warriors take out of this? First, if they play their game — and last night proves that their game is most certainly not a half-court motion offensive game — they can keep up with anyone. Who knows: if they weren’t on the back end of a back-to-back, maybe they would have had enough energy to keep it up just a bit longer and carry a big enough lead into the 4th to hang on.

Second, Dorell Wright has truly turned a corner. He’s been much more aggressive of late, and I think that really helps his outside shot as he’s able to do other things to get himself going if he’s missing from deep early. Before, his only response seemed to be to keep on firing from 3 or disappear completely.

Now they need to put it together for a full game against a quality opponent. Next up is the Magic on Monday, so let’s see if the Warriors can take the positive (perfect first half!) from this game instead of the negative (epic second half collapse!). Here’s where the reportedly awesome team chemistry could make a big difference…

This one is about as close to a freebie as you can get. The Heat dominated the Warriors in Oakland last month, and I can’t imagine that anyone thinks they’ll do any better in Miami on the back half of a back-to-back.

But if they are able to steal this game, it will be because Dorell Wright has the homecoming game of his life (on both ends of the court), Curry goes on a white-hot shooting streak, Monta plays within himself and doesn’t force any action inside, and the Warriors bigs are able to hold their own inside and kept the rebounding margin close.

Who wants to take a bet that all that will happen?

Well, that was ugly! But a win is a win is a win, and with a date in Miami tomorrow night against the Heat you can be sure that the Warriors will take it.

The defensive rebounding in the 4th quarter was just atrocious; hard to say you deserve to win when you give up 3 defensive rebounds off free throws in the final 12 minutes.

Have to give credit to the backcourt in this one — Curry’s four made 3′s were all big, and Monta got his scoring touch back despite a less-than-efficient 11-23 from the field. David Lee had a quiet line with 8 and 8, but came up with a lot of big rebounds in the closing minutes.

I usually don’t like to blame officiating, but some of the calls in this game were just atrocious. Amundson got destroyed on a layup with no call, that Monta offensive foul after he was clearly held was brutal, and that Diaw pass-to-himself that wasn’t called was insane — though thankfully someone on the crew noticed and gave the Warriors a makeup call on the out of bounds.

And as for my Stephen Jackson key to the game in the preview? My dream came true — with that ugly shot at the end, he arguably lost the game for the Bobcats. Happy New Year!

The Warriors face the easiest game of the current roadie in a New Year’s Even matinee (as an aside, kinda brutal that they have to play a back to back over New Year’s). That said, it’s still a road game, and it’s against a team that seems to have gotten a nice spark from a coaching change (2 straight wins since Silas took over). What to watch for today:

  • Healthy Backcourt. Monta still seems to be struggling with his ankle sprain, and Curry has the flu on top of his own ankle problems. I’d have to imagine that adrenaline along will carry the day for Curry as he plays in front of his home-town fans, but getting Monta back in order will likely be a necessary condition for a W today — especially considering that the Bobcats’ starting backcourt has averaged 58 points and 9 assists in their last 2 games.
  • More Udoh. Udoh only played 6 minutes in the last game, with Smart blaming conditioning and saying he looked a step slow. Let’s hope he has his wind back, as the Warriors will need some inside play over the next 48 hours with Biedrins and Gadzuric still out. Plus, Charlotte seems like a good matchup for him — let’s see if he can take advantage.
  • Don’t Let Jackson Beat You. This is more personal preference than a true key to the game, but please Warriors, I beg of you: don’t let Stack Jack go nuts from deep and win the game on his own. Please.

The Warriors played a 4pm game after flying across the country and…looked like a team playing a 4pm game after flying across the country.

Well, aside from Dorrell Wright, that is. Dude might finally be putting it together, pairing more aggression with his previously shown ability to get open and knock down 3′s. If he can show the same mindset on a night when the Warriors big 3 do better than 13-38, we could finally have the semblance of a hard-to-stop offense.

But that didn’t happen last night, and despite holding their own on the boards, the Warriors shooting cooled off, they got beat in the paint, and their assist numbers were way down from the past few games (though Curry had an impressive 12 dimes against 3 turnovers in only 29 minutes).

Now the Warriors head to Charlotte, where Curry will get a hero’s welcome but Stephen Jackson will be lying in wait to torment us. Let’s hope Curry and Ellis are feeling a bit better (ankles/flu and ankle, respectively) — this is the easiest game on the trip, and one they have to have in order to hang in there if they hope to use the upcoming January/February stretch to make a run back to respectability.

Injuries and the Draft

My knee surgery
Kevin Pelton at Basketball Prospectus has Festivus grievances. Mainly that NBA GMs are too cautious and worry too much about injuries when it comes to the Draft. The discussion is brought about by Brandon Roy’s knee problems and Kevin McHale’s declaration that Minnesota traded Roy for Foye because they knew Roy’s knees would eventually give out. Roy had surgery on both knees before he was drafted. I am sure the money Minnesota saved by paying the 7th pick rather than the 6th pick had nothing to do with it.

As it turned out, Roy is now dealing with those very knee problems, but only after a highly productive start to his NBA career. Here are the WARP totals through 2009-10 of everyone drafted in the 2006 lottery:

Of the 14 lottery picks, how many of them are likely to match Roy’s current WARP total? LaMarcus Aldridge is likely to get there, and Rudy Gay, who is still young and already has put up 3.0 WARP this year, has a pretty good shot. Tyrus Thomas might do so if he figures things out. And that’s it. So even if we conservatively assume that Roy is entirely finished as an NBA player of value, he is still likely to be at worst the fourth-best player in the lottery. Suffice it to say that Foye, who can’t even get off the bench for one of the league’s worst teams, is not going to make it.

Even in hindsight it is easy to say that picking Roy was the right call for Portland, especially over Foye. As Kevin points out, even if Roy never plays another NBA game he is a lock to be the 4th best player in the 2006 lottery. IF HE NEVER PLAYS AGAIN. With rookie salaries the financial hit of an injury prone player is much less that that of a veteran, so at worst Portland’s mistake was extending Roy, but not drafting him.

On the other side of the coin is Roy’s team mate, Greg Oden. Was Pritchard more of a gambler than the other NBA GMs? Was Oden’s injury easier to see coming? I certainly think that on the scale of injuries to worry about the knees of a “Big Man” are far more worrisome than the knees of a back court player. The guard may rely on speed and with shaky knees be slowed down, but with a slimmer body mass he may just be slowed down rather than stopped. A guard who has lost a step still has something to offer where as an already slow center with bad knees doesn’t have much.

And POB was only the third worst lottery pick of 2006! Good job Warriors.

The Warriors start their 5-game road trip in Atlanta in just a few minutes. The Hawks haven’t exactly turned into the elite Eastern Conference team they were threatening to be a few years ago, but they’re still rolling at 20-13 so far this year — including 9 in a row at home — so it would make for a great start to the trip if the Warriors can keep up their recent run and extend their winning streak to 4 games. I think that will take another strong shooting night and a merciful end to the terrible turnovers that have marred even their recent wins, so let’s see what happens. At the very least, let’s hope they keep it close to avoid a big stinker to set the wrong tone for the trip.

It is officially a winning streak! Last night’s game was not the prettiest one out there but a win is a win is a win. Watching the second half it almost looked as if both teams were running in slow motion and were not all that interested in winning. The Warrior’s missed way too many easy shots had plenty of sloppy turnovers and the 76ers looked like no one knew which play they were supposed to run.

David Lee outplayed Elton Brand, even with missing a few easy ones (21 & 16 +15 versus 16 & 16 -16) or 0 and -1 in respect to the team +/-. I was personally not feeling any regrets about Brand not being in a The City uniform. Any max big should be getting 15 & 15 on the Warrior’s with their eye’s closed. Add that to fact that Brand was a monster on the boards in the first half but seemed to disappear in the second half and you don’t have a “Winner.”

Jrue Holliday on the other hand played really well and looked fantastic. As Fitz pointed out about a dozen times he looks like a leader out on the court. Did he outplay Curry in this game? Probably but maybe not as much as their point and assist totals will lead you to believe. Holliday went for 23/11 while Curry sported 17/8 while their +/- versus the team were similar +2 versus +3. Holliday certainly has the appearance of having the higher ceiling, but for some reason I just picture him languishing on a bad team not making the other players around him better, where as Curry just seems to scream Playoff PG who makes his team mates better. I have no stats to back this up and it may not even be true, but that is my impression early in their careers.

Monta had an off night but when 20 points scored on 8-19 is an off night I will take it. More importantly maybe was his perfect night, 4-4, from the stripe. Over the last 4 games his FT% has been much better. Hopefully he is turning that corner. Monta also had 12 assists, most if not all of which were very legitimate assists. On a night when his shooting touch was a little off he got his team mates the ball. “He has had at least seven assists in four straight games, a first in his career.”

Udoh showed a few flashes and Admundson seemed to miss shots I could have made.

Who have I left out? Oh yeah D-Wright had a decent game. 25 points 5-7 from behind the arc, 4 assists with 0 TOs, the dude was a beast and really led the 3rd quarter pull away. Overall the Warriors were electric behind the arc going a combined 15-23, 65%. It is pretty easy to win games when you are hitting that many 3s.

The Warriors go for three in a row against a very beatable 76ers team tonight, and it’s a win they need before they head out on the road for a fairly tough 5-game trip. What to watch for tonight. Here’s to a better shooting night from Curry (and that he at least outplays Holliday), some rebounds for Udoh, no pangs of regret from not signing Elton Brand after Baron fled, and a first chance to see Evan Turner play.
