I think a 10-game improvement sounds just right, so I’ll go with 36-46. What say you all?

The Warriors kick off their season in the shadow of the Giants postseason run, so they’ll have a bit of privacy as they try for a better start than last year. Once again, they get to start at home against a Rockets team on the back end of a back-to-back.

There’s only one thing to watch for tonight, and that’s whether the Warriors can get a win. Three keys to the game:

  • Biedrins 10+ rebounds. Is the old Biedrins back? If so, that completely changes the Warriors front court and will allow them to hang with a team like the Rockets.
  • Curry <5 turnovers. His most disturbing trend in the preseason was lack of caution with the ball. Was he just testing the outer limits of the new motion offense, or is he trying to do too much?
  • Monta >50% shooting. The biggest key to Monta making it to the next level is getting his volume shooting under control. If he can make plays while increasing his shooting efficiency, he might finally start earning some respect from around the league.

It’s that damn Curry! He’s so hot right now!

by

Does Steph Curry have Hollywood Dreams? In a recent email ticket pitch he offers up his best Blue Steel impression:

or is it Le Tigra?

Zoolander 2 is apparently a go. Curry would fit nicely within the proposed idea as a one of the new young models that have come up since our heroes devotion to the School For Kids Who Can’t Read Good (and want to learn how to do other things good).

I’m guessing he focuses on another disaster: GSW

Opening Night

by

Watching the Heat lose to the Celtics was certainly gratifying despite my hatred of Boston sports fans. On the second half of the TNT docket is Houston vs LA Lakers. We get a preview of tomorrow night’s Warriors opponent in the Rockets with the added bonus that they will be on the second half of the dreaded road back-to-back. Hopefully the Black Mamba and Ron-Ron can wear them down.

Adrieeeeeeeeeeen!

by

(I know, it’s a forced reference).

Breaking news: apparently, Larry Reilly has decided to “use” his extra roster spot and keep Jeff Adrien on board.

How was this even a question after Miles was cut? I know it’s a fairly small sample size, but Wages of Wins has Adrien rates as the second best rookie in the preseason behind only Blake Griffin in terms of wins produced. With two of our big guys on the shelf for the foreseeable future, why wouldn’t you give Adrien a shot?

Preseason Game 7: Lakers 105, Warriors 102 (OT)

by

The preseason comes to a close with Keith Smart showing how little trust he has in his bench by giving the bulk of the minutes to just 6 players (Curry and Dorrell Wright both sat the game out with injuries). Monta played all 53 minutes, taking a ton of shots (30) but also making plenty (16) on his way to an NBA preseason high of 41 points. That said, his 7 turnovers gave flashbacks to his pressing days of last season when he was forced to carry the short-handed squad.

Reggie Williams slid into the point guard role in Curry’s absence and by all accounts was terrific — 27 efficient points to pair with 8 assists. Looks like we may have found our answer to the question of who can spell Curry at the point (mercifully freeing Lin to learn how to play at the professional level in the D-League).

With Dorrell Wright out, VladRad played 30 minutes on his way to a decent looking line, though it sounds like he fell apart near the end of the game. Brandon Wright also got plenty of run, some of it at the 3, but was only able to total 5 points and 5 boards while posting a soul-sucking -23.

Good game writeup by feltbot that makes some interesting points about the Warriors’ aversion to the pick and roll and Brandon Wright’s terrible game.

Biedrin’s line jumps out of the box score thanks to his +19 and 10 rebounds, and Lee also had a solid all-around game with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 assists (but 5 turnovers).

The Warriors won the rebounding battle yet again. As Mike Massa notes, the Warriors finish the preseason with a +4.13 rebounding margin, giving hope that they successfully addressed their biggest weakness in the offseason.

On to the regular season!

Preview: Warriors at Lakers, Part II

by

Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Lakers | 7:00 p.m. | ESPN

It’s time for the final preseason game of the year, as the Warriors meet the Lakers once again in a place that isn’t the Staples Center. This also is one of our first chances to see the new team on the teevee — what to watch for tonight:

  • Who else can play? With Stephen Curry out tonight to nurse his sprained ankle, we’ll get a great chance to see who else can play in the back court. Look for Lin, Williams, and Bell to get most of the minutes alongside Monta — will any of them stand out?
  • Is Biedrins back? Another double-double would go a long way toward convincing me that he’s really back (at least, as much convincing as can be done in the pre-season).
  • Rebound margin. The Warriors have done a great job out-rebounding their opponents this pre-season. Can they keep it up for one more game?

Preseason Game 6: Lakers 120, Warriors 99

by

Let’s focus on the good news first: Biedrins! Puts up a solid 11 points and 13 rebounds in 29 minutes, with a made free throw (!!!) and the best +/- of the starters at -4.

And: Lin! Sure, his +/- was pretty weak at -16, but he played 18 minutes, had 4 assists, and committed zero turnovers. Not exactly setting the world aflame, but a nice step forward and his best argument yet for getting real minutes in the early going.

And: Brandon Wright and Reggie Williams with production off the bench! Both dropped 14 points, though Wright’s rebounding totals were pretty weak with only two. Overall though, the Warriors outrebounded the Lakers 48-37, continuing one of the best trends of the preseason.

Now the bad news — Monta somehow managed a -29 in just 21 minutes of work, and had a largely invisible stat sheet. Curry went out with a sprained ankle that is apparently better than it looked at least. VladRad got the start (?) and was pretty woeful with 1-7 shooting — I assume that Smart was trying to send a message to Dorrell Wright as he ultimately ended up with the bulk of the minutes at the three, and had a decent line with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists (but a -18 +/-).

And the Lakers shot 56%. That’s gotta change.

Postscript: Jeff Adrien got only 4 minutes of playing time, but grabbed 4 rebounds and had the best +/- of the night at +5. Granted, they were probably garbage minutes, but the dude keeps putting up solid minutes whenever he gets on the court.

Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Lakers (in San Diego) | 7:00 p.m. | KTCT 1050

The Warriors head down to SoCal tonight to play the Lakers in San Diego at the “Valley View Casino Center,” a 1960′s era venue that is probably pretty interesting inside. With the Giants on tonight, I’d have to imagine that this will be the lowest rated game in the Ticket’s history. What to watch for:

  • Identify the Identity. Matt Steinmetz made an interesting point in his chat yesterday that, so far, the Warriors haven’t developed any sort of offensive identity. I know they’re working on installing the new motion offense, but I’d love to see them work on the pick and roll and try to get some easy buckets for Lee to get him going. At the very least, it would be nice to see them get their shooting percentage up from the 33% they shot in the last game.
  • Can Lin back up the point? I think it’s a long shot — as Steinmetz also pointed out yesterday, he definitely has work to do. More likely, he’ll get some D-League seasoning and perhaps be ready to provide some quality backup minutes in the second half of the season. He has two more nights to show that he deserves some regular season minutes — let’s see if he takes advantage.
  • If not Lin, who? In the more likely case that Lin isn’t the answer, who can provide some backup minutes at the point?
