Preview: Nuggets at Warriors

The Warriors try to pick themselves up off the floor tonight against the visiting Nuggets, who will be somewhat hobbled by injuries to Chauncey Billups and Nene and a (hopefully) distracted ‘Melo. Should be a good opportunity for our inside guys — Lee and Biedrins — to rebound from their woeful performance against the Suns, as they’ll have a solid challenge in dealing with Anthony and Kenyon Martin, not to mention Nene if he plays. Should also be a good test for Keith Smart — if the team comes out flat again tonight, it could be one more step toward the Warriors looking for a new head coach this offseason.

These are starting to write themselves. The Warriors couldn’t shoot, were outclassed inside yet again with Lee out, had to over-rotate to protect the middle (usually against Anthony), and gave up constant wide open looks from 3. The one bright spot last night was the solid effort from the bench, an effort that was ultimately wasted by inept play down the stretch (feltbot argues that bringing Gadzuric back in at the end killed their chances — as usual, hard to disagree).

On defense, Carmelo just destroyed the Warriors. They regularly doubled him — leaving their shooters, including Harrington multiple times, wide open at the arc — and he still took 17 shots from the line (making all of them). If Lacob was sitting courtside last night, I’d have to imagine that Anthony’s 39 points and complete dominance led to a dangerously large puddle of drool.

On the other end, all non-Carney Warriors couldn’t hit a shot to save their lives. Monta’s shot was flat all night on route to a 7-22 line, Curry was barely better at 8-21, and Wright was again invisible offensively (and has begun passing up open shots at the arc). Wright’s inability to defend Anthony should also be noted.

After the hot start, the Warriors have returned to .500. They now head out on a road trip filled with winnable games, though I’m not sure I’d call them that with the way the team is currently playing. With a stretch of seven playoff teams upon their return to Oakland, we can only hope that they manage to pull a few of these off and avoid a goose-egg on the roadie.

Preview: Nuggets at Warriors

The Warriors get a chance to wipe out their dreadful L.A. memories with a game against Denver tonight in Oakland. The Nuggets match the Warriors with a 7-6 record, and will be a bit more rested as they last played on Saturday (beating the Nets 107-103 at home). What to watch for tonight:

Showing up when you need to. The Warriors head out on a geographically long 3-game roadtrip to Houston, Memphis, and Minnesota after tonight, so it would be great to bag a home game before they go. The Warriors got off to a nice start to the season by winning the games they needed to in order to have a chance for the playoffs, and I think tonight qualifies. But they missed a similar opportunity last Friday against the Knicks, and Denver is better than the Knicks.
Frontcourt bench, again. Carmelo and Nene offer another big challenge upfront, and Lee and Brandon Wright remain out. Adrien was better last night against the Lakers, so he could be the key guy there.
Shoot the rock. For the Warriors to win tonight against the Nuggets, they’re going to need to score. And with Lee out, their best hope to score big is to shoot well from outside. I’d love to see Dorell Wright get back on the bandwagon by getting hot from deep for the first time in a while.
