The scene: Warriors trailing by 4 with just over a minute left. They haven’t gotten a defensive stop in the final minutes, and need one desperately on this trip. An alley-oop pass goes up to a wide open Mahinmi — and he misses it! Curry streaks down the court with the ball and…turns it over.

For a team like the Warriors to beat a team like the Mavericks, they need to be at the top of their game. They don’t need to be perfect, but they can’t make stupid mistakes in key game situations. The Warriors failed that test tonight in a game where they had a chance to pull off the much-needed upset on the road, leaving us with an entertaining game but nothing to show for it in the end.

Aside from the sloppy play, there was a lot to like in this game: Amundson provided a nice shot in the arm off the bench, Lee had a nice bounce-back from his fourth quarter benching in Oklahoma City, and Dorell Wright had a double-double on the way to a solid overall game.

But, ultimately, the bench provided little beyond Amundson and a few nice Radmanovic bombs (and jeez, Reggie Williams is starting to STINK), and the Mavericks made the plays at the end while the Warriors’ sloppiness sealed their fate. And now they go to San Antonio tomorrow night after four of the five starters played 40+ minutes. Looking like an 0-for road trip for sure at this point…

P.S. Can someone teach these assholes how to shoot free throws?

The Warriors come away with a sorely needed victory, riding David Lee’s enthusiasm and Dorell Wright’s hot hand to a win over the lowly T-wolves. Boy, it’s nice to see a new green tick on the left for the first time in a while!

As far as the formula for victory, on first glance this one is a bit of a head scratcher as the Warriors were out-rebounded 55-32, were out-shot from the line 31-17, and gave up 22 and 21 to Kevin Love. But what they did do was shoot over 50% while holding the T-wolves under 40%, went 12-18 from deep, assisted 26 of their 40 field goals, and dominated the turnover battle 21-11. That should do the trick most nights.

They had a nice start, taking a lead at the end of the first quarter for the first time in a while (though they did bleed a bigger early lead down to 2 by the end of the period). And their third quarter was one of their best of the year, with Wright refusing to miss from outside and Gadzuric providing a huge burst of energy off the bench.

Gadzuric finished with 8 points and a team-high +18 in 18 minutes off the bench subbing for a foul-prone Biedrins, and Smart deservedly gave him the game ball. Dude is obviously awkward and borderline uncoordinated, but damn does he bring the energy every night. Unlike many Warriors of recent vintage, effort is never the problem with him.

Outside of Gadzuric though, the bench reverted to its largely useless status. Monta played the full 48, Wright was over 46, and Lee played 43 minutes in his first game back from two weeks off. I think Smart was well aware of how much they needed this game.

So the legend of David Lee will grow, even though he only had 10 points and 6 rebounds. But he seems to have a big impact on defense with his size and communication, and the team clearly benefits from his energy and leadership. And as GSOM notes, he kept Vlad on the bench which may have been his biggest contribution of all.

The (potential) savior arrives tonight as David Lee makes his triumphant return to the team. The Warriors will need a boost after the loss in Memphis, and the late start last night won’t be doing them any favors. What to watch for tonight:

  • Beef Injection. With a few notable exceptions (such as last night), the Warriors have been getting destroyed inside since Lee went out with his elbow injury. How much of an impact will he have tonight, considering that he couldn’t even get his heart rate up for a week and a half? At the very least, his enthusiasm, defensive communication, and great hands on the boards have to be an improvement over what we’ve seen the past two weeks. The question is whether it will be enough to spur a win on a road back-to-back.
  • No Love. WP48 credits Kevin Love with 4.1 wins — and no other Timberwolf (sp?) has generated even one (Anthony Tolliver, of all people, is second on the team with .7). Keep him relatively quiet and the Warriors should have an excellent chance to win the game. We’ve already seen what Love can do this year, so this will be quite the matchup for Lee on his return. I’d like to see Adrien work on Love a bit as well, as his bodying up on Zach Randolph slowed the Grizzlies’ biggest post-presence last night.
  • Day Old Beans. Biedrins looks like a completely different player last night, with great energy, smooth moves, and soft hands. Can’t expect him to be similarly dominant on the back end of a back-to-back (especially since he played over 40 minutes last night), but it would be great to see him build on last night and at least show similar energy in spurts tonight.

The Warriors waste a career night from Biedrins and, more important, a great opportunity to steal one on the road before Lee comes back tonight. They shot 49% from the field, outrebound the Grizzlies 44-33, held Randolph and Gasol in check, and were even close in terms of foul shots with 23 attempts to the Grizzlies 29. But when it really mattered at the end, huge turnovers and missed shots pushed the losing streak to five games.

Dorell Wright was the goat in this one, as he missed two huge shots near the end — one a botched attempt to pick up a foul, the other a wide-open 3 with the game on the line. Let’s hope he bounces back like he did the last time he had a wretched game…3 games ago. After a great start to the season, games like this make you wonder if there was a reason why Wright never got a chance to play big minutes until this year.

Back to Biedrins, he was an absolute beast around the rim tonight. Perhaps most impressive was how smoothly he moved around the rim, taking a single dribble when needed to get in better position for a layup. That’s something we never would have seen from him a few years ago, and combined with his improved set of post moves from about 8-10 feet he might be using enhanced skills to make up for any lessened quickness compared to his earlier days.

The controversy du jour from tonight’s game was Smart’s 4th quarter decisions with regard to the bench: both Monta and Steph were kept out of the first five minutes of the quarter, and while the reserves didn’t do too bad as the deficit only grew from 5 to 8, as Steinmetz pointed out on the post-game show that stretch was the perfect opportunity to close the gap with the Memphis starters on the bench (Smart was planning to bring them in a bit earlier but there wasn’t a dead ball for several minutes). The decision to pull Curry after two bad plays and leave him on the bench until the 2-minute mark was also odd, and raises some questions about Smart’s coaching skills.

I thought this exchange from the Chronicle writeup was a big strange:

“I had two possessions when I was rusty. I’ve got to learn to ease my way back into a game when I sit that long,” said Curry, who had 26 points.

“I don’t buy that out-of-rhythm stuff. That’s a cop-out by ballplayers,” Smart said. “When I played, we were ready to play at any time.”

Silver linings? Jeff Adrien had a breakout game with 12 points (on 6-11 shooting), 8 rebounds, and a team-high +6 in over 30 minutes. Adrien still has flaws — the Grizzlies got a lot of easy inside baskets in this game — but until Amundson is back, he needs to jump over Gadzuric and Radmonovic in the front-court rotation.

Speaking of those two fools, Gaszuric managed a -15 in only 8 minutes of action last night. Radmonovic was slightly better and even hit a three, but his behind-the-back pass to the Grizzlies’ bench near the end of the game was a killer. The rest of the bench was similarly worthless: Carney in particular was extremely disappointing after a few solid games in a row; Lin was ok defensively but went 0-4 from the field with all four shots being blocked; and Reggie Williams played a largely forgettable 17 minutes with only 7 points.

And O.J. Mayo going for 23 off the bench? I guess no one read my game preview…

So now it’s on to Minnesota for a must-win game on the back end of a back-to-back. At least David Lee will be waiting for them when they get there — now we get to see how much the recent slide has been his absence and how much is just a tougher schedule exposing the Warriors’ flaws.

The Warriors got some good news before tonight’s game, as David Lee has been cleared to play and is flying out to Minnesota to meet the team for the final game of the road trip. But he won’t be available tonight, so the team will try once again to get that elusive second victory without their big offseason acquisition. The Warriors won the first meeting between these two, though the Grizzlies were without Zach Randolph and he’s back and expected to play. What to watch for tonight:

  • Home Cookin’. Memphis is Monta’s offseason home, and he had the team over for Thanksgiving dinner last night at his “compound.” Monta’s been struggling since banging his hip, and is mired in his worst shooting slump of the season. Here’s hoping a couple nights in his own bed have recharged him a bit.
  • Inside, inside, inside. It’s been a broken record since Lee’s been out, but this game will once again hinge on whether the team of Andris, Gadzuric, Adrien, and, yes, Radmanavic can hold off Randolph and Marc Gasol inside.
  • Hold the Mayo. Regular Monta trade rumor partner O.J. Mayo has been struggling this year, and he was recently demoted to the bench for the first time in his NBA career. So he’ll be motivated to have a big game, and lord knows the Warriors are a good target for those sorts of attempts. I’ll probably watch the ESPN 2 feed, but for those of you watching CSN I hope you don’t have to hear Fitz ranting about the amazingly poor luck that would cause Mayo to go off against the Warriors of all teams — since defense of course can’t be blamed.

Another game that was there for the taking, but the Warriors decided instead to melt down once again at the end of the fourth quarter.

The story of the game (aside from Chuck Atkins Hayes’ career night) was the free throws, as the Warriors had more made field goals (42-31) but took only 18 foul shots to the Rockets 51. Hell, Kevin Martin, the Most Annoying Player in the NBAâ„¢, scored 25 points on only 4 made field goals. Check the downward spikes on the net fouls and net free throws sparklines to the left — ugly stuff.

Lots of discussion on the Twitters and various game recaps about who’s to blame for the disparity. Fitz blames the refs, Smart refused to comment, Reilly blames having to go small due to injuries, Feltbot thinks that’s bullshit as last year’s team went small all the time and never had this problem, Lauridsen blames the Warriors for playing defense with their hands, Ethan puts the blame squarely on Monta’s gambling defense, and Rusty blames the lack of driving inside.

I think it’s primarily a mixture of the last three items — the Warriors guards just can’t keep anyone in front of them, leading to most of the fouls on the defensive end; and until they can get the pick and roll working and force defenses to stay honest with the big guys, the lane will remain packed, Curry and Ellis won’t draw fouls when they drive into brick walls of defenders, and the team will then settle for outside jumpers.

If that diagnosis is correct, then there’s a least a chance that things will get a bit better when Lee comes back. I’d actually expect his contribution on the defensive end to make the biggest difference, as his communication and overall intensity is sorely needed on that end. But I certainly don’t expect his return to “solve” the problem (they were still net negative on fouls for most of his starts).

Back to last night’s game, it was nice to see Dorell Wright finally get back on track with a solid all-around offensive game, and Reggie Williams continued his recent run of strong play (he led the team with a +8). With Carney and Lin also contributing quality minutes recently, there remains some hope that things could turn around with Lee back up front if the starting back court could get on track (and if we could keep Radmonovic off the court).

But until that happens, I worry this ugly run will continue. Monta doesn’t look like the same player (that hip injury a bit more serious than reported perhaps?), as he doesn’t have nearly the same energy without that ball that he did in the first few games. We need our best players to start playing like our best players again.

The Warriors face a Rockets team that is reeling in the early season, will be missing Aaron Brooks and Yao Ming tonight, but has likely circled this game as the ideal opportunity to get back on track. What to watch for tonight:

  • Shoot the damn ball. The shooting percentages have been brutal over the past few games (and, really, all year), and until they get some bodies back inside that’s the number one thing that needs to change for them to have a shot. With Monta regularly being doubled, the other shooters need to step up and hit the open shots they’re going to get (and have been getting — and missing). Until that happens, hard to give this team a chance.
  • Da Bench. Want to get depressed about our bench? Read this item from Owen. The one bright spot was actually the last game, when Carney and Williams dropped in 16 each. Let’s hope they can make it a trend.
  • Inside D. Even with a health Lee, Luis Scola had a monster game on the inside in the season opener. I’d love to see Adrien get a chance to put a body on him tonight, and either way interior defense will need to be a team effort to slow him down.

These are starting to write themselves. The Warriors couldn’t shoot, were outclassed inside yet again with Lee out, had to over-rotate to protect the middle (usually against Anthony), and gave up constant wide open looks from 3. The one bright spot last night was the solid effort from the bench, an effort that was ultimately wasted by inept play down the stretch (feltbot argues that bringing Gadzuric back in at the end killed their chances — as usual, hard to disagree).

On defense, Carmelo just destroyed the Warriors. They regularly doubled him — leaving their shooters, including Harrington multiple times, wide open at the arc — and he still took 17 shots from the line (making all of them). If Lacob was sitting courtside last night, I’d have to imagine that Anthony’s 39 points and complete dominance led to a dangerously large puddle of drool.

On the other end, all non-Carney Warriors couldn’t hit a shot to save their lives. Monta’s shot was flat all night on route to a 7-22 line, Curry was barely better at 8-21, and Wright was again invisible offensively (and has begun passing up open shots at the arc). Wright’s inability to defend Anthony should also be noted.

After the hot start, the Warriors have returned to .500. They now head out on a road trip filled with winnable games, though I’m not sure I’d call them that with the way the team is currently playing. With a stretch of seven playoff teams upon their return to Oakland, we can only hope that they manage to pull a few of these off and avoid a goose-egg on the roadie.

Can’t say I’m optimistic about this one — I fully expect the Warriors to complete a hat trick of awfulness for the Bay Area sports scene today. With Denver coming to Oakland tomorrow night, I’m all for pulling the rip cord at the earliest sign of trouble to get the starters some rest. What to watch for tonight:

  • Monta’s attitude. It’s been a trying pair of games for Monta, as he carried the team both games only to be largely kept out of the offense in the fourth quarter. I don’t really expect him to have a let down against the Lakers (and the only player he considers better than himself), but if he is once again the only player who can hit a first-half shot it will be interesting to see if he starts to dog it a bit,
  • Inside hope. Lee remains out and Brandon Wright stayed in Oakland with his bad back, leaving it up to the same cast of characters that got massacred on the boards against the Knicks. I don’t expect them to win the battle tonight, but it would nice to get a glimmer of hope that the Warriors have a chance until they get their big guys back.
  • Curry’s funk. Curry had a good stat line against the Knicks, but it just didn’t feel right. He was ugly in the first half, and his second half surge came at the expense of chances for Monta. For the Warriors to have any chance tonight, Curry needs to have a great *point guard* game tonight.

After a first glance at the box score, you’d think there’s no way the Warriors should have been in this game. They gave up 57% shooting; were out-rebounded by 9; and of the Knicks 33 missed shots, they offensive rebounded 12 of them.

And yet, if Stephen Curry could have just stayed with Danilo Gallinari in the closing minutes when he hit his dagger threes, maybe the Warriors actually pull this one off. That capped a horrid defensive night for Curry, who also was largely responsible for Ray Felton’s career night (though in fairness, Felton appeared to make a deal with the devil before the game). The defensive back-court problems are no longer about Curry and Ellis being able to play together; they’re now just about Curry.

As usual with Lee out, Monta carried the team with 40 points — though only 3 of them came in the fourth quarter (he still posted a +2, which is tough to do when your team loses and you play 46 minutes). Thankfully, Reggie Williams had his first big game of the season and came up big late, catching on fire from deep on his way to 16 fourth quarter points.

Curry made up for things a bit with his offense, posting 29 points to go with 8 assists and 4 turnovers. But he was woeful in the early going, with his easy misses fueling the Knicks first-half surge, and he badly bricked a three in the closing minutes that stemmed the Warriors momentum and allowed the Knicks to get some separation late.

But he was all-world compared to the production the Warriors got from the power forward position. 8 points and 5 rebounds were credited to the Warriors at the 4 tonight, a far cry from the 28 and 10 that David Lee provided in New York. His elbow can’t recover fast enough. Even my boy Jeff Adrien wasn’t much help, with a couple nice plays but only 4 rebounds in 14 minutes. Stoudamire went for 28, and combined with Felton for 61 points and only 6 missed shots between them.

The bright spot in the front court was Biedrins, who was rolling crazy 8′s with 8 points, 8 rebounds, and a team-high +8. But foul trouble once again limited him to 30 minutes.

The bottom line is that a team can’t give up 57% shooting and expect to win. I think you have to give the Knicks a lot of credit on this one, as they were hitting awkward shots and buzzer beaters all night. But they were also making wide-open shots after good ball movement (Gallinari’s 3′s being the most glaring examples), and this one can’t all be laid at the feet of a good shooting night. Down the stretch, the Warriors had momentum but simply couldn’t get a stop.

The biggest disappointment here is that the Warriors missed a chance at a winnable game right before the start of a tough stretch. They head down to Staples center for an almost guaranteed loss to the Lakers on Sunday night, then play the Nuggets at home on a back-to-back on Monday in a game they’ll likely need to win without Lee to stay above .500.

Upsides? Aside from Randolph’s DNP-CD (and you know he wanted to play in this game), at least we have this to enjoy:
