After a first glance at the box score, you’d think there’s no way the Warriors should have been in this game. They gave up 57% shooting; were out-rebounded by 9; and of the Knicks 33 missed shots, they offensive rebounded 12 of them.

And yet, if Stephen Curry could have just stayed with Danilo Gallinari in the closing minutes when he hit his dagger threes, maybe the Warriors actually pull this one off. That capped a horrid defensive night for Curry, who also was largely responsible for Ray Felton’s career night (though in fairness, Felton appeared to make a deal with the devil before the game). The defensive back-court problems are no longer about Curry and Ellis being able to play together; they’re now just about Curry.

As usual with Lee out, Monta carried the team with 40 points — though only 3 of them came in the fourth quarter (he still posted a +2, which is tough to do when your team loses and you play 46 minutes). Thankfully, Reggie Williams had his first big game of the season and came up big late, catching on fire from deep on his way to 16 fourth quarter points.

Curry made up for things a bit with his offense, posting 29 points to go with 8 assists and 4 turnovers. But he was woeful in the early going, with his easy misses fueling the Knicks first-half surge, and he badly bricked a three in the closing minutes that stemmed the Warriors momentum and allowed the Knicks to get some separation late.

But he was all-world compared to the production the Warriors got from the power forward position. 8 points and 5 rebounds were credited to the Warriors at the 4 tonight, a far cry from the 28 and 10 that David Lee provided in New York. His elbow can’t recover fast enough. Even my boy Jeff Adrien wasn’t much help, with a couple nice plays but only 4 rebounds in 14 minutes. Stoudamire went for 28, and combined with Felton for 61 points and only 6 missed shots between them.

The bright spot in the front court was Biedrins, who was rolling crazy 8′s with 8 points, 8 rebounds, and a team-high +8. But foul trouble once again limited him to 30 minutes.

The bottom line is that a team can’t give up 57% shooting and expect to win. I think you have to give the Knicks a lot of credit on this one, as they were hitting awkward shots and buzzer beaters all night. But they were also making wide-open shots after good ball movement (Gallinari’s 3′s being the most glaring examples), and this one can’t all be laid at the feet of a good shooting night. Down the stretch, the Warriors had momentum but simply couldn’t get a stop.

The biggest disappointment here is that the Warriors missed a chance at a winnable game right before the start of a tough stretch. They head down to Staples center for an almost guaranteed loss to the Lakers on Sunday night, then play the Nuggets at home on a back-to-back on Monday in a game they’ll likely need to win without Lee to stay above .500.

Upsides? Aside from Randolph’s DNP-CD (and you know he wanted to play in this game), at least we have this to enjoy:

Like the Pistons game on Monday, today the Warriors face a team they saw on the road just the week before. But in this case, the Warriors are playing for a sweep after sacrificing David Lee’s left elbow for the win at Madison Square Garden. The Warriors will be well rested, but so will the Knicks, as they just broke a 6-game losing streak by beating the Kings in Sacramento on Wednesday. Here’s what to look for tonight:

  • Slowing Stoudamire. He was a beast in New York, scoring 33 (14 of those from the line) and snagging 10 boards. With Lee out tonight, the Warriors will need to play interior defense by committee. Hopefully we get a chance to see if Jeff Adrien can do anything to slow a quick big like Stoudamire.
  • Avoid the whistles. The Warriors set their season high in steals fouls in the previous game against the Knicks, and all told there were 58 fouls and 75 free throws taken in the game. With Lee out, I think the Warriors would love a more free-flowing game so they don’t get stuck in a half-court grinder with Stoudamire drawing inside fouls the whole night.
  • Get Curry going. Curry was solid on Monday against Detroit, but he hasn’t really looked himself since…the Knicks game last week when he scored 25. More concerning are his assist totals, where he’s broken 6 just once since opening night. Tonight would be a great night to post his second double-double of the year.

OJ Mayo

Straight outta Vancouver explores the trade market for OJ Mayo. Mark Travis seems pretty open to the idea of improving them team by shipping OJ Mayo off for some pieces that fit better with the rest of the team.

The problem for O.J. is that he’s on a team with three above average players (Rudy Gay, Marc Gasol, and Zach Randolph) that all need looks and more often than not it seems like Mayo gets the short end of the stick.

On the season, Mayo is averaging the second most field goal attempts a game for the Grizzlies, but minor injuries have slowed the starts of Randolph and Gasol to this point and they will both likely be more aggressive and effective once they are 100% healthy. Additionally, Mike Conley seems like he is going to be shooting the ball a bit more this season based on his play during the first couple of weeks, which only takes more looks away from Mayo.

He offers up a bunch of trade scenarios with multiple teams one of which is our GSWs:

Golden State Warriors Receive: O.J. Mayo, Hasheem Thabeet

Memphis Grizzlies Receive: Monta Ellis

This offer was reportedly made last season but the Warriors turned it down. Ellis has looked a lot better this season, so there is obviously still incentive for the Grizzlies to make this deal, but Conley’s extension means Ellis would be stepping into the same role Mayo was forced into and he’s a lot more assertive than Mayo with his shot attempts, so that may not work out for Memphis. Still, there are few players as talented as Ellis and his ability to create, even though he prefers to shoot, is better than Mayo’s at this point.

I cannot imagine that this trade is even a remote possibility. If the offer was indeed made last season and the Warriors turned it down why in the world does he think it is now a possibility. Ellis is playing much better and more importantly seems to be much happier. The only reason to have even thought about this trade last year was if you thought Ellis and Curry could not play together or that Ellis was just going to Capt. Jack his way out of town. However if you think Ellis and Curry cannot play together what makes you think that Curry and Mayo can play together? Add that to the fact that Biedrins is playing much better this season and when David Lee is healthy and the emergence of Jeff Adrien off the bench I don’t know if Thabeet would even be wearing a uniform most nights. He may be more useful than Gadzuric, but probably not more useful than Vladimir Radmanovic and certainly not more useful than Adrien.

In short: NO DEAL.

Enjoyed the first half of the Lacob/Guber Welcome Game a lot, the second half not so much. How they go from 65 points in the first to only 36 in the second is beyond me.

It was nice to see a game in the Arena for the first time this year, and the atmosphere was great with the half-off promotion. Enjoyed a delicious blackened chicken nachos that was ridiculously tasty for only $5.50!

Back to the game, my main takeaways are that a) this team really misses David Lee, and b) until he comes back, we need to see more of Jeff Adrien. His offense may never come around, but if it ever does he could turn into an amazing find. He led the Warriors with a +16 in only 16 minutes.

While I in no way wish we still had Maggette, this was the sort of game where he could get to the line and help the team score when nothing else was working. If Monta could ever figure out how to get to the line reliably, we could potentially spare ourselves the sort of pathetic offensive endgame we saw from the Warriors last night.

This also gives me a chance to highlight how disappointing Reggie Williams has been so far this year. He was billed as a scoring spark-plug off the bench, but so far his late-season form from last year has been nothing but a distant memory. I think they’re putting a lot on him in having him pick up some PG duties, so maybe just going back to the basics — scoring — would help at this point.

This was their first win with Lee out, which is great because they have a few more to go now that he’s out for an extended recovery period. Hopefully we’ll get to see a bit more of Adrien, and also a few less fouls from the guards, pls.

The Warriors debut their new ownership team tonight, as the team returns to the Oracle for some much needed home cooking. I’ll be headed out to the game tonight to enjoy some half-priced fun, and it will be great to get a good look at this team from up close. Unless his status has changed since Saturday, Lee is not expected to play tonight. What to watch for:

  • Return of the shot. In their last two games, the Warriors have shot 34% and 41%. Can they get back on track now that they’ll be playing at home and with good rest for the next two games?
  • Get to the stripe. As Owen at the Golden State Worriers notes in his stats-based recap of the first ten games, one place that the Warriors have really fallen off this year is in getting to the line. I think this starts with hitting enough outside shots to make the other team pay attention to the shooters, which creates the space for Monta to drive and draw obvious fouls against recovering defenders. But if the other team doesn’t need to honor the shooters, they can pack the lane and watch as the refs swallow their whistles while Monta drives right into a brick wall of interior defenders.
  • A new backup 4? In Saturday’s game, Jeff Adrien did what Brandon Wright seems congenitally incapable of: taking full advantage of an opportunity. Adrien grabbed 8 boards in 19 minutes with a +10 and was by far their most productive backup at the power forward spot. With Lee out another game, will Adrien get the start? And if he does, can he make it count?

The road trip mercifully comes to an end, and one can only hope that a good night’s sleep in their own beds will remind these guys (Monta excluded) how to shoot. Outside of his 9-16, the rest of the team went 19-66 (29%). Ugly.

And the board-work wasn’t much better. The Warriors got creamed 58-42, a margin that would have been worse without Adrien’s solid contribution of 8 boards in 19 minutes. Adrien posted a +10, and after Brandon Wright’s lifeless zero-rebound performance I’d like to see Adrien get some more playing time in the games ahead. Adrien’s already 6th on the team in Wins Produced in just 30 minutes, so might as well see what you’ve got before Amundson and Udoh return.

Aside from Adrien’s nice contribution off the bench, Monta deserves a ton of credit for being the only starter to really show up tonight. Curry went 3-14, Dorell Wright went 2-14, and Biedrins went 0-4. These are just not the sorts of lines you can get from your starters on the road and expect to win (especially with a guy like Lee out).

With the new owner’s half-price promotion on Monday, I’d expect to see a sold out, extremely drunk crowd in their return to the Oracle. If that doesn’t give this team some energy and snap them out of their scoring funk, I’m not sure what will.

Ugly loss. When you’re missing your best inside player and then turn the ball over 9 times in the opening period on the road, you’re basically giving yourself no chance. Hopefully they can forget this one before finishing up the roadie tomorrow night in Milwaukee.

Upsides to this game? None that I can really see. The deficit hit 30 points in the second quarter, and still Monta played 37 minutes. You get the opportunity to see if Jeremy Lin and Jeff Adrien have anything to offer, and they get 9 and 6 minutes, respectively. They lose the rebounding battle, shoot 41%, and give up 55% shooting.

At least it’s just one game, and no one really faults them for losing to the Bulls on the road without Lee. Still, you’d hope to have at least seen a better effort. Let’s hope they get some needed rest before playing the red-hot Bucks tomorrow night.

Adrieeeeeeeeeeen!

(I know, it’s a forced reference).

Breaking news: apparently, Larry Reilly has decided to “use” his extra roster spot and keep Jeff Adrien on board.

How was this even a question after Miles was cut? I know it’s a fairly small sample size, but Wages of Wins has Adrien rates as the second best rookie in the preseason behind only Blake Griffin in terms of wins produced. With two of our big guys on the shelf for the foreseeable future, why wouldn’t you give Adrien a shot?

Preseason Game 6: Lakers 120, Warriors 99

Let’s focus on the good news first: Biedrins! Puts up a solid 11 points and 13 rebounds in 29 minutes, with a made free throw (!!!) and the best +/- of the starters at -4.

And: Lin! Sure, his +/- was pretty weak at -16, but he played 18 minutes, had 4 assists, and committed zero turnovers. Not exactly setting the world aflame, but a nice step forward and his best argument yet for getting real minutes in the early going.

And: Brandon Wright and Reggie Williams with production off the bench! Both dropped 14 points, though Wright’s rebounding totals were pretty weak with only two. Overall though, the Warriors outrebounded the Lakers 48-37, continuing one of the best trends of the preseason.

Now the bad news — Monta somehow managed a -29 in just 21 minutes of work, and had a largely invisible stat sheet. Curry went out with a sprained ankle that is apparently better than it looked at least. VladRad got the start (?) and was pretty woeful with 1-7 shooting — I assume that Smart was trying to send a message to Dorrell Wright as he ultimately ended up with the bulk of the minutes at the three, and had a decent line with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists (but a -18 +/-).

And the Lakers shot 56%. That’s gotta change.

Postscript: Jeff Adrien got only 4 minutes of playing time, but grabbed 4 rebounds and had the best +/- of the night at +5. Granted, they were probably garbage minutes, but the dude keeps putting up solid minutes whenever he gets on the court.

Jeff Adrien Pre-season WP48

Sorry for the back to back Arturo posts, but Arturo has done a small work-up of pre-season wins produced. Keep in mind that these are pre-season numbers, but Jeff Adrien is #3 in the league behind Kevin Love and Blake Griffon and immediately ahead of Udonis Haslam and LeBron James. Don’t expect that to be the case come the regular season, but it shows that Adrien may be a very effective and valuable player. Of course none of these absurdly high WP48s will hold, so sample size may just be way too low to take anything at all from it, but if trends are at all accurate it looks like the Dub’s made the right choice for their 15th roster spot.
