Despite a somewhat shaky first half, this is the first time in a while where the Warriors won a game they’re supposed to win in the way that they’re supposed to. No last-second shot or overtime needed; the Warriors won going away and even got to enjoy being on the positive side of garbage time for the first time in a long time. They won every quarter, and held the T-Wolves to just 77 points.

The bigs deserve most of the credit in this one, as they frustrated Kevin Love and his frontline friends on the way to a +41 between Lee, Biedrins, Udoh, and Amundson. They won the rebounding battle against a team that bested them by 21 on that stat in their last meeting, and fueled the Warriors big turnover advantage by making Darko cough up the ball and generating 10 blocks (5 of those for Udoh). And, of course, ending Love’s double-double streak is a nice trophy achievement — one that should go in Lee’s case.

Another thing that stood out about this game was how ugly it was during the Warriors’ run over the 3rd and 4th quarters. It had a slow, plodding pace with a ton of whistles, but for once the Dubs were the beneficiary of ugly ball as they completely flummoxed the Timberwolves’ offense and got plenty on their own offensive end to pull away.

So, good to see a game play out the way it was supposed to, as the Warriors have been a bit lazy about playing up/down to their level of competition this year. But to win consistently you need to beat up on the teams you should, then steal a few against those above you. This was a nice step in that direction — and tonight we’ll see if they can keep it up with a road game against the Kings.

It is already halftime by the time I got this up and Kevin Love has 20 and 11, but the Warriors have a 4 point lead. The Warriors are single digit points away from their full game scoring total against the Hawks.

So how about some keys to the second half:

  • REBOUND.  Already -10 on the rebound front.  They gotta grab a few more boards and stop giving up so many offensive rebounds.  19 total rebounds versus 14 Minnesota Offensive rebounds at the half.
  • Only 7 Warriors have gotten into the game so far versus 11 T-Wolves.  Will the W’s have any gas left in the 4th Quarter.
  • David Lee is having a decent game.  Can he actually have a good game in a win or only when the game is all but over?

Kevin Love seems to be the biggest snub here and should get the injury replacement for Yao Ming. Monta isn’t making it unless someone else gets hurt. I have to admit I am slightly surprised by the Blake Griffin choice. He is damn good don’t get me wrong, but it kinda reeks of NBA promoting their next big star before he is really a star. But I guess it is nice to see a new name or two. As good as Duncan has been in his career he does not belong in the 2011 All-Star Game.

Truehoops on the Monta “snub” which I think is dead accurate:

Turn off your inner critic for a moment. Speak not of efficiency, nor wins and losses. Take a deep breath. Go to your happy place. Listen to the airy music. And just watch what this guy does: He takes big piles of nothing and turns them into and-1s. He takes your lazy passes and makes them steals and dunks. He takes double teams and splits them. He takes your slow defender and makes him fall over. He takes your outstretched arms, and, little though he is, shoots over them, and hits every time. At least, that’s how it goes in the highlight reel. He’d be fun to watch in Los Angeles. (And Commissioner Stern, think how much cheaper the travel would be, sending a guy who lives a tad farther up the coast.)

All in all I cannot make a strong argument that Monta should have been an All-Star. If he had made the team, I don’t think I would have had a strong argument that he should have been left off though either. It is probably best that he gets a rest.

The Warriors got a much needed win last night thanks to the T-wolves which handed the Warriors their last win. So thanks Minnesota. But in all honesty the Warriors should beat Minnesota every time they play and either Monta or Curry is on the court. The Monta-Curry (Williams last night) duo is just so much better than Minnesota’s backcourt. If you are starting Luke Ridnour you are not a very good team. This is still shocking reminder that Minnesota took two point guards in the 2009 draft and have nothing to show for it.

Admunson was a force off the bench and sported an eye-popping +22. But if you watched the game last night you did not need to see that stat to know he was one of the major reasons they Warriors were able to pull away late. And pull away late on the back end of the B2B even if it was at home. This smelled like a trap game so it was great to see them pull it off.

Props obviously have to go to Monta for scoring 30+ points and playing all 48 minutes. Reggie Williams had another good game, including a monster heart stopping dunk. I swear I think he is going to come up short and brick those high flying dunks every time.

David Lee had another double-double 10-11, but was a pathetic -13. I am not sure I believe he is all the way back to 100% yet. At least let’s hope that is the reason otherwise this is going to be a long half a decade paying his salary. But props to him and the rest of the big men for holding Love and Beasley in check.

The (potential) savior arrives tonight as David Lee makes his triumphant return to the team. The Warriors will need a boost after the loss in Memphis, and the late start last night won’t be doing them any favors. What to watch for tonight:

  • Beef Injection. With a few notable exceptions (such as last night), the Warriors have been getting destroyed inside since Lee went out with his elbow injury. How much of an impact will he have tonight, considering that he couldn’t even get his heart rate up for a week and a half? At the very least, his enthusiasm, defensive communication, and great hands on the boards have to be an improvement over what we’ve seen the past two weeks. The question is whether it will be enough to spur a win on a road back-to-back.
  • No Love. WP48 credits Kevin Love with 4.1 wins — and no other Timberwolf (sp?) has generated even one (Anthony Tolliver, of all people, is second on the team with .7). Keep him relatively quiet and the Warriors should have an excellent chance to win the game. We’ve already seen what Love can do this year, so this will be quite the matchup for Lee on his return. I’d like to see Adrien work on Love a bit as well, as his bodying up on Zach Randolph slowed the Grizzlies’ biggest post-presence last night.
  • Day Old Beans. Biedrins looks like a completely different player last night, with great energy, smooth moves, and soft hands. Can’t expect him to be similarly dominant on the back end of a back-to-back (especially since he played over 40 minutes last night), but it would be great to see him build on last night and at least show similar energy in spurts tonight.

Jeff Adrien Pre-season WP48

Sorry for the back to back Arturo posts, but Arturo has done a small work-up of pre-season wins produced. Keep in mind that these are pre-season numbers, but Jeff Adrien is #3 in the league behind Kevin Love and Blake Griffon and immediately ahead of Udonis Haslam and LeBron James. Don’t expect that to be the case come the regular season, but it shows that Adrien may be a very effective and valuable player. Of course none of these absurdly high WP48s will hold, so sample size may just be way too low to take anything at all from it, but if trends are at all accurate it looks like the Dub’s made the right choice for their 15th roster spot.
