Warriors Wave Carney

Goodbye Rodney Carney — we hardly knew ya. I’m not super torn up about it, as he provided some nice variety but was hardly a difference maker (Reggie Williams is largely the same player but with better handles and the chance to take over a game offensively). There’s speculation (spin?) that they waived Carney to open up the possibility of an unbalanced trade (e.g. 3-for-2 or 2-for 1); I wonder if they have anything specific in mind…

It should be noted that they still COULD have made an unbalanced trade in the future, except that they would have had to pay Carney if they waved him to clear the roster spot (his contract wasn’t guaranteed yet, but would have been after the 10th). Is this a sign of the new owners trying to stay cheap, or does it really matter with an end-of-the-bench player who shoots too many 3′s and was having trouble staying healthy?

In related news, both Lin and Law had their contract guaranteed.

The Warriors return home to face a surging Rockets team — a team that, like the Trail Blazers, is finding a way to win even in the face of injuries. Imagine that! What to watch for tonight:

  • Comparison Time. Once again, we get the treat of watching the Most Annoying Player in the NBA™, Kevin Martin, a guy who plays like Monta but manages to draw about twice as many fouls (and converts much better once he gets to the line). I’ll be watching closely to see what the difference is in the two players’ styles — my guess is that Martin manages to draw fouls on the way past players whereas Monta has a habit of driving right into defenders, but it will be interesting to watch them side-by-side. (And don’t forget that in the last game against the Rockets, the Warriors were outshot from the line 51-18)
  • Inside Game. Yao is now officially out for the season, though he didn’t play in either of the previous matchups anyway. You’d think that the Warriors should be able to do some damage on the inside against the Rockets, but instead they’ve given up back-to-back career games to Chuck Hayes. Not sure if Biedrins will be back tonight, but given his previous performance against Hayes it might be nice to see what Amundson (or Udoh! Or Lee at the 5!) can do instead.
  • Score. I assume that Curry is still out (probably being saved for the Christmas Day prime time matchup), so once again a big question is whether or not the Warriors can score enough points to win. Monta had his season-high (on an efficient 18-24 from the field) in the opening night matchup, and now would be a great time for a repeat. Would also be nice if Reggie could rediscover his 3-point shooting stroke, and can Carney make it two good games in a row?

Well, that was quite the wasted opportunity. The Warriors overcome a mostly awful night and still had a chance to win at the end. But Monta bricked a gift of a look, leading to a tough loss in terms of both the game and his trade value.

Of course, if they hadn’t dug themselves into a 15 point hole with less than 8 minutes left, their impressive run over the closing minutes could have made the difference.

So I guess in terms of positives we can appreciate the contributions of both Carney and Radmanovic off the bench, and the fact that Lee didn’t have the worst +/- of the night for the first game in a while (Amundson barely edged him).

But other than that, this was a weak performance in a very winnable game. In fact, I’m starting to wonder if Mike Singletary has taken over this team: the offense is uncreative, the players make stupid mental errors constantly, and the staff never outcoaches their counterpart (and regularly gets pwn3ed on that front). As the Kawakami’s of the world will (rightly) note, the Warriors can’t blame injuries when they lose to a team that has clearly outdone them on that front.

No excuses: the Warriors should have won this game. And the more they miss these opportunities, the more the case for blowing up both the roster and the coaching staff is being made.

Postscript: I guess the hype about Udoh was just that, hype. A DNP-CD on a night where Biedrins was out and Amundson was basically in foul trouble from the opening tip? I get that the Blazers represent a relatively small matchup, but to not even make it off the bench makes you wonder just how ready this guy actually is.

Another game that was there for the taking, but the Warriors decided instead to melt down once again at the end of the fourth quarter.

The story of the game (aside from Chuck Atkins Hayes’ career night) was the free throws, as the Warriors had more made field goals (42-31) but took only 18 foul shots to the Rockets 51. Hell, Kevin Martin, the Most Annoying Player in the NBAâ„¢, scored 25 points on only 4 made field goals. Check the downward spikes on the net fouls and net free throws sparklines to the left — ugly stuff.

Lots of discussion on the Twitters and various game recaps about who’s to blame for the disparity. Fitz blames the refs, Smart refused to comment, Reilly blames having to go small due to injuries, Feltbot thinks that’s bullshit as last year’s team went small all the time and never had this problem, Lauridsen blames the Warriors for playing defense with their hands, Ethan puts the blame squarely on Monta’s gambling defense, and Rusty blames the lack of driving inside.

I think it’s primarily a mixture of the last three items — the Warriors guards just can’t keep anyone in front of them, leading to most of the fouls on the defensive end; and until they can get the pick and roll working and force defenses to stay honest with the big guys, the lane will remain packed, Curry and Ellis won’t draw fouls when they drive into brick walls of defenders, and the team will then settle for outside jumpers.

If that diagnosis is correct, then there’s a least a chance that things will get a bit better when Lee comes back. I’d actually expect his contribution on the defensive end to make the biggest difference, as his communication and overall intensity is sorely needed on that end. But I certainly don’t expect his return to “solve” the problem (they were still net negative on fouls for most of his starts).

Back to last night’s game, it was nice to see Dorell Wright finally get back on track with a solid all-around offensive game, and Reggie Williams continued his recent run of strong play (he led the team with a +8). With Carney and Lin also contributing quality minutes recently, there remains some hope that things could turn around with Lee back up front if the starting back court could get on track (and if we could keep Radmonovic off the court).

But until that happens, I worry this ugly run will continue. Monta doesn’t look like the same player (that hip injury a bit more serious than reported perhaps?), as he doesn’t have nearly the same energy without that ball that he did in the first few games. We need our best players to start playing like our best players again.

The Warriors face a Rockets team that is reeling in the early season, will be missing Aaron Brooks and Yao Ming tonight, but has likely circled this game as the ideal opportunity to get back on track. What to watch for tonight:

  • Shoot the damn ball. The shooting percentages have been brutal over the past few games (and, really, all year), and until they get some bodies back inside that’s the number one thing that needs to change for them to have a shot. With Monta regularly being doubled, the other shooters need to step up and hit the open shots they’re going to get (and have been getting — and missing). Until that happens, hard to give this team a chance.
  • Da Bench. Want to get depressed about our bench? Read this item from Owen. The one bright spot was actually the last game, when Carney and Williams dropped in 16 each. Let’s hope they can make it a trend.
  • Inside D. Even with a health Lee, Luis Scola had a monster game on the inside in the season opener. I’d love to see Adrien get a chance to put a body on him tonight, and either way interior defense will need to be a team effort to slow him down.

These are starting to write themselves. The Warriors couldn’t shoot, were outclassed inside yet again with Lee out, had to over-rotate to protect the middle (usually against Anthony), and gave up constant wide open looks from 3. The one bright spot last night was the solid effort from the bench, an effort that was ultimately wasted by inept play down the stretch (feltbot argues that bringing Gadzuric back in at the end killed their chances — as usual, hard to disagree).

On defense, Carmelo just destroyed the Warriors. They regularly doubled him — leaving their shooters, including Harrington multiple times, wide open at the arc — and he still took 17 shots from the line (making all of them). If Lacob was sitting courtside last night, I’d have to imagine that Anthony’s 39 points and complete dominance led to a dangerously large puddle of drool.

On the other end, all non-Carney Warriors couldn’t hit a shot to save their lives. Monta’s shot was flat all night on route to a 7-22 line, Curry was barely better at 8-21, and Wright was again invisible offensively (and has begun passing up open shots at the arc). Wright’s inability to defend Anthony should also be noted.

After the hot start, the Warriors have returned to .500. They now head out on a road trip filled with winnable games, though I’m not sure I’d call them that with the way the team is currently playing. With a stretch of seven playoff teams upon their return to Oakland, we can only hope that they manage to pull a few of these off and avoid a goose-egg on the roadie.

Great game from just about everyone. Can’t believe I’d ever see the Warriors score 85 points and win a game, as this one was ugly as hell and a sure loss had it been last year.

With very few outside shots falling, I give full credit for the win to the front line that produced another winning rebounding battle (continuing the perfect link between a positive rebounding +/- and winning the game).

Lee had troubles with his shot, but had the huge tip-in late and another double-double with 14 and 15. Andris was also huge inside with 20 rebounds, playing about as big and quick as I can remember seeing him.

Gadzuric was surprisingly good off the bench, bringing plenty of energy and hauling in 6 rebounds. He was tapping a few balls in addition to the rebounds he was credited with. I also liked what I saw from Carney (especially his big late bucket), though his team-low -6 doesn’t impress.

Now they take it on the road, playing some teams that they definitely should be able to beat. I’d love to see them win at least 2 of the 5.

Preview: Warriors at Suns

Golden State Warriors at Phoenix Suns | 7 p.m. | No TV/radio

The Warriors head down to Phoenix tonight for the second half of a back-to-back. What to watch for:

  • Bench production. After playing four of the starters more than 30 minutes last night (with 25 for Biedrins), you’d have to imagine that the bench will get a lot more time tonight on the back end of a back-to-back. Can Brandon Wright crack double digits in either scoring or rebounding? Can Rodney Carney continue to work himself into the offense? Can Charlie Bell show any sort of offensive game? And can Jeremy Lin build on a solid game last night?
  • The continuing saga of roster spot #15. Neither Miles nor Adrien got much playing time last night, though both had solid stats in the limited minutes they played. Assuming they get more time tonight, can either one make a statement? Right now, the external factors are pointing to Adrien (Amundson’s injury and Lin’s solid play last night), so Miles will have to start turning things on soon if he hopes to snag that final spot.
  • Curry’s TO’s. He had 8 turnovers on Saturday, and 6 last night — and the beat writers are starting to notice. Can he put a clean game together tonight?

Preview: Warriors at Trail Blazers

Golden State Warriors at Portland Trail Blazers | 7 p.m. | No TV/radio

With Amundson and Carney finally ready for action, this game is all about figuring out our bench. What to watch for:

  • Where’s the beef. Is Amundson the “beef” we need to spell Biedrins at the 5 and provide tough D on the opponent’s center? If he’s truly healthy, I hope we’ll see him getting at least a few minutes defending Oden.
  • Who’s Rodney Carney? I admit to knowing next to nothing about this guy. According to Wages of Wins, he’s become a more efficient player over the years and the best place for him to make his mark is clearly defense. But if he starts shooting a ton of threes, then we may have a problem.
  • Wither Wright? The reports are that Brandon Wright’s DNP-CD in the last game was for not showing up in practice. Let’s hope he’s made some strides in the days following, as he’s going to run out of opportunities to show what he can do if he can’t even earn himself some preseason playing time.
  • The continuing battle for #15. Tonight will give us another data point in the Jeff Adrien vs. Aaron Miles battle for the final roster spot. Amundson’s return will likely have an impact on how necessary Adrien is, so if Miles can show he can actually dish the ball he could make some major strides tonight.
