Great win for the Warriors, as they weathered a strong start from the Clippers, adjusted well compared to last Sunday, and finished strong to pull away at the end.

Game ball goes to Radmonovic for his two clutch 3′s in the 4th quarter, and for leading the team with a +19. Though there were plenty of players deserving last night: Monta for his huge first half (and though the foul trouble was rough, it kept him fresh at the end of the game), Reggie Williams for providing a huge spark off the bench (particularly in the 2nd after Monta went to the bench with his 3rd foul), David Lee for his solid line and great passing, and even Andris looked like the Goose of old at times before he fouled out.

The postgame talk has been about Curry’s benching at the 4:00 mark of the 4th, but you certainly can’t argue with the results. It just may be the case that against bigger backcourts, Curry will need to sit when the game slows down in crunch time to avoid being a liability on defense. That said, his early offense in this game was huge, especially after his rough game in LA on Sunday.

The Warriors now get a few days off before continuing the home stand in an MLK day matinee against the Nets, which kicks off a stretch of 3 games (Nets, Pacers, and Kings) they desperately need to win as they work to get back to .500.

If the Warriors wanted revenge for last Sunday’s disappointing loss to the Clippers in LA, they didn’t have to wait long. The Clips will be in Oakland tonight, fresh off a win over the Heat that makes me a tad bit worried about tonight’s game.

Let’s hope the Warriors can play more like the team that barely lost to the Lakers on Wednesday, rather than the half-asleep losers who stunk up the Staples Center on Sunday. Seems like it’s been a long time since they had that two-game winning streak — and even longer since the inspiring win over the Hornets — as I feel like I’ve had a bad taste in my mouth for a lot longer than just since Sunday. But they get a chance to wipe that away in front of the home crowd tonight, so let’s see if they can start turning things back around.

Scoring by quarter

When looking at the scoring by quarter data on our revamped Stats page something looked odd to me. Scoring by quarter did not appear to be randomly distributed. With the season approaching the 50% mark I thought I would do some very basic analysis to see if my eyes were lying to me. Short story: maybe, maybe not. There are slight differences in scoring by quarter and we can make some statements about trends but strictly speaking differences are are not significantly significant (p<0.05) although it would have been pretty shocking if they had been.

First, the Warriors’s scoring by quarter in a boxplot. For those unfamiliar there are a few basic things you can take away from a boxplot. The box contains the 50% of the data set. The lower (left) edge of the box represents the 25th percentile and the upper (right) edge of the box represents the 75th percentile. The line in the box is the median, meaning half the data points lie above it and half lie below it. A tighter box means a tighter data set and less variability. A median line off center of the box suggests a bias in the data. The whiskers are 1.5 times the Inter-quartile range and any circles are further outliers.

The Warrior’s points by quarters boxplot through the 1/12/11 Laker’s game:

What does this graph tell us? The 3rd quarter tends to be their most consistent quarter from game to game. Pretty damn tight. The first quarter is their highest scoring quarter by a small margin, but when they suck in the 1st they can suck all the way down the spectrum. Look how skewed the box is in regards to the median. That is a wide range of below median scoring. The 4th quarter may be their most inconsistent quarter, but I imagine it may be that was for a lot of teams especially if you are on either side of a blow out, but that is pure speculation.

What about the Warriors’s defense, looking at opponent scoring by quarter?

The Warriors’s defense is pretty bad in the 1st quarter. It is on the edge of actually being statistically significant from the second quarter when their defense improves (almost significantly!). Interestingly their 3rd quarter defense is the most consistent just like their offense. If only games contained 3rd quarters and nothing else.

Overall their defense is less sporadic than their offense. The Warriors are streaky shooters, but their opponents don’t tend to be, at least when they are playing the Warriors.

UPDATE: Season +/- by quarter below. Their most consistent 3rd quarter is actually their second worst by the +/-, so really they need to play all 2nd quarter games. I guess their defense is just that much better in the second and the key to scoring differential may lie in their defense rather than their offense.

Didn’t watch the game, but the box score tells the same old story: destroyed on the boards (47-27), destroyed at the line (29 FTAs to 11), and destroyed in the paint (56-40 on points in the paint). On the bright side, the Warriors played great for 3 quarters, but like in Miami and Orlando, let things get out of hand late (not going to win many games when you give up 46 points in the 4th quarter).

Nice game for Monta with 38 on a fairly efficient 15-26, and Wright and Curry also played well with 27 points and 10 assists respectively (with Curry being the only plus player at +2).

But another invisible game from Biedrins, a quiet night for Lee on the boards, and a DNP-CD for Udoh. Throw in what sounded like the usual late-game heroics from Kobe, and the end result was depressingly the same. The Warriors are now 1-2 on their “easy stretch,” so they better start getting things in gear before the season slips too much further out of reach.

Well, I sure hope the Warriors got some rest since their stinker in L.A. against the Clippers, because tonight they get to face a Lakers team that kicked the everliving shit out of the Cavs last night (almost doubled them up — and how about that -57 for Manny Harris?).

Not sure what to say in the preview since I’m almost less optimistic in this game than I was when they faced Miami a few weeks ago (though that turned out a bit better than expected, all things considered). So good luck tonight, Warriors — you’re going to need it.

Yeesh, the less said about this stinker the better. Almost a clean sweep of red on the net stats above — thank goodness for 3-point shooting percentage!

4 of 19 from Ellis isn’t going to cut it. 3 rebounds from Lee isn’t going to cut it. 2 of 13 from Curry isn’t going to cut it. 0 points on one shot from Biedrins isn’t going to cut it. Wright was ok, but as Xian noted on the game thread his foul troubles weren’t helpful either. All in all, not the sort of performance that a playoff worthy team puts on, even in an early start on the road.

A solid win, and while the Warriors let the Cavs hang around a bit longer than I would have liked, can’t really complain about an 18 point victory and a lead that never dipped below 10 in the second half.

Game ball goes to David Lee, who showed signs of his former self with 22 points and 14 rebounds while leading the team with a +24. Monta also had a solid game with 32 points on 10-21 shooting, and he even got 8 full minutes of rest. Credit also goes to the team for hitting 20 of 21 foul shots (though Cleveland has 15 more attempts from the line — getting to the stripe continues to be a big problem for this team).

Now the Warriors will head down to LA to play the Clippers in a Sunday matinee, and it would be nice to get another win in before the Lakers come to town on Wednesday. And let’s hope Curry recovers well from that flagrant foul, as it was nice having everyone back healthy for the past few games…

The Warriors return home to host the dreadful Cavaliers tonight. The Cavs have lost 8 in a row and 18 of their last 19, so there are absolutely no excuses for losing this game. Hell, I’d say there’s no excuse for not winning by double digits, especially since it appears that Varejao and Daniel Gibson will both be out with injuries. So no keys to the game, other than just win baby!

Raise your hand if you thought the Warriors would pull this one out after the way they ended the 3rd quarter!

Sure, pulling out a win in Miami or Orlando would have been more impressive, but given their road record this year this definitely qualifies as a quality win. And with 14 of their next 18 games at home, this could be the spark that puts them on a path to stay in the race for the final playoff spot for a few more months.

What impressed me most was how they didn’t give up despite two horrible sequences. The Hornets run to close the third — after the Warriors had closed to 4 with just a few minutes remaining — was quickly countered in the opening minutes of the 4th. And after taking a 10 point lead in the closing minutes of the game, the Warriors proceeded to turn the ball over, give up an offensive rebound on a missed foul shot, and allow an uncontested layups to cut the lead to 2. But they never let the Hornets tie — thanks in part to a HUGE block by Dorell Wright on David West — and they were able to stem the bleeding and retake control of the game.

Looking at the net stats, I’ll give credit for the win to the incredible low number of turnovers from the Warriors. Despite being cleanly out-rebounded, the Warriors ended up with 5 more shot attempts from the field because they were able to hang onto the ball. The assist numbers also paint a pretty picture: they hit their season average but without anyone having more than 4, an indication of solid ball movement from everyone throughout the night.

And how about that Ekpe Udoh hook shot over David West in the back half of the 4th quarter?

So kudos to the team — I expected another blowout at the tail end of a road trip, but instead they persevered and beat a decent team on the road. Now let’s see if they can build on this!

The Warriors finish off the road trip tonight in New Orleans, where they’ll play a Hornets team that started the season white-hot but has been some mediocre since. But it’s still a road game, and after two straight games with awful second halves I can’t say I’m optimistic about this one.

The good news is that the Warriors are expecting to have their full roster tonight, so hopefully that will help them overcome their usual final-game-of-the-trip letdown. To win tonight, they’ll need to match the fast starts they’ve had in their last three games, but then keep up that energy through to the end. Or, in the immortal words of Mike Singletary, “FINISH!”
